It all comes down to this. 221 days after the group stages began, Man City and Chelsea collide with the coveted Champions League trophy at stake.

After years of agony in Europe, Pep Guardiola’s intrepid Premier League winners are on the brink of completing owner Sheikh Mansour’s ambitious project by claiming a maiden Champions League crown.

They have already secured a fifth league title in nine years, as well as the Carabao Cup, and are on the verge of completing one of the most successful seasons by an English club ever.

Notwithstanding an uncharacteristically sluggish start to the season, they have blitzed the domestic competition and brushed aside Borussia Monchengladbach, Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain en route to Porto’s iconic Estádio do Dragão.

It’s been a case of no striker, no problem for Guardiola, who has employed a false nine system in City’s biggest moments this season.

Their superlative cast of attacking midfielders – spearheaded by Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez – has been in inspired form at home and on the continent and will be pivotal in Portugal.

“We fought together and we’re in the final of the Champions League, and those are nice words,” said Guardiola, who is looking for his first European crown since departing Barcelona.

“Every day these guys have been consistent and this is remarkable.”

Standing between them and European glory are a Chelsea side whose momentum has stalled under Thomas Tuchel in recent weeks.

After a blistering start under the former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain boss, they limped into the Premier League’s top four on the final day despite losing at Aston Villa.

In fact, they have suffered defeat in three of their last four matches in all competitions (including the FA Cup final against Leicester) and appear to have lost form at the worst possible moment.

Champions League Final Preview Show

The full show willalso available to subscribers on demand later that evening, while there are several repeats scheduled. Check out our TV Guide for more information.

They will, however, take solace in their recent record against Man City.

A late Marcos Alonso strike handed them a rare Premier League win at the Etihad weeks after they ended City’s hopes of an unprecedented quadruple with a 1-0 win in the FA Cup semi-final.

The ubiquitous N’Golo Kante and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy look set to be fit for the Porto showpiece after returning to training. Timo Werner is likely to lead the line, flanked by Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic.

Chelsea have, of course, been here before. They defied the odds to lift their first ever Champions League crown in 2012 after stunning Bayern Munich in Germany and they’ll be looking to repeat those heroics nearly ten years later.

After missing out in last season’s final with former club Paris Saint-Germain, Tuchel will have extra motivation to go one better this time around.
