Mahashivratri or ‘The Great Night of Shiva’ is a Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Shiva, the God of destruction within the Trimurti. According to Drik Panchang, Mahashivaratri falls every year in the month of Phalguna. This year the festival of Mahashivaratri will be celebrated on 8th March on Shukla Paksha in the month of Phalguna (February/March). The day before the new moon corresponds to the beginning of the auspicious tithi of Mahashivratri.
It is widely believed that lord Shiva performs the ‘Tandava’ or the divine dance on the night of Mahashivratri.
Also, Mahashivratri is the sacred day of the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati In the Shaivism tradition of Hinduism, Mahashivratri is one the greatest festivals for shaivites. Mahashivratri is known as ‘Herath’ in Kashmir Shaivism.

The devotees of Lord Shiva perform sacred rituals by chanting the divine mantras of lord Shiva.
